Gormenghast - Mervyn Peake, since I read the trilogy in my teens.
The BBC adaptation a few years ago was okay, despite Steerpike being far to pretty (played by Jonathan Rhys Myers, Henry VIII in The Tudors; in the books the role sounds more suited to a young John Lydon). Fuchsia Groan is the subject of The Drowning Man by The Cure.
