As an owner of a Siamese cat, Doreen Tovey's books are very close to my heart. Over the past few decades, she's written about unforgettable pets like Solomon and Sheeba, Seely and Sheebalu, and Annabel the donky. So far I've read Cats in the Belfry, The New Boy and Double Trouble. These are books that have me laughing out loud one minute and crying the next. There's a beautifully emotional passage when Solomon dies that always moves me to tears -
"We buried him in our wood. In the clearing opposite the cottage, where the daffodils bloom in springtime where once, when he was young, we'd watched him leap in persuit of a wildly clucking pheasant. We buried him in his basket through whose air holes, as a kitten, he'd one got his head stuck on a journey to Halstock and I'd had to push it back. It had been his basket all his life. He lay so very still now in the bottom of it."
