John Cale and band at the Manchester Academy, 21st January 2007
I arrived at the venue early enough to get a space right at the front, but I was disappointed to find that photography wasn't allowed because I was in a very good position for taking pictures. There was no support band so John and his band came on straight away. They played an eclectic mix of old and new songs, the highlight of the set was Big White Clouds which was so beautiful it made my mother cry. The only disappointment was that he didn't do Gun. His band were innovative young musicians, the bassist played an electric double bass on one song (the first time I've ever seen one) and the drummer had a very dynamic, humerous style of playing. The guitarist even used a toy violin with his guitar at one point! John is aged 65 and turning grey now, but he can still perform with a fierce spirit that is missing from a lot of modern musicians.
